Young Children's Memory for the True and Pretend Identities of Objects
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two studies examined how children conceive of the true and pretend identities of an object Used in object-substitution pretense. In each study, 3and 4-year-olds were assessed for their memory for each identity of an object that they used in a previous episode of pretend play (Study l ) or observed someone else using (Study 2). More children correctly remembered the true than the pretend identity oftbe objects, and there was no contingency between their tendency to remember each identity. Additionally, children's tendency to correctly specify each identity was related to their age and when (i.e., during or after the pretend episode) the task was given. The results were explained by factors affecting young children's ability to manage separate representations of true and pretend identities of objects.

Young children understand multiple pretend identities in their object play.
This set of studies examined the ability of 3-year-olds to conceptualize multiple pretend identities with objects. Rather than relying on verbal response measures, as has been done in the past, children's creative and inferential pretend actions were used as indicators of their understanding. The common structure to all four studies was that children were confronted with one pretend scenario, m...

Each fictional world that adults create has its own distinct properties, separating it from other fictional worlds. Here we explore whether this separation also exists for young children's pretend game worlds. Studies 1 and 1A set up two simultaneous games and encouraged children to create appropriate pretend identities for coloured blocks. When prompted with a situation that required the use o...

The focus of the present study was the role of cultural learning in infants' acquisition of pretense actions with objects. In three studies, 18- and 24-month-olds (n = 64) were presented with novel objects, and either pretense or instrumental actions were demonstrated with these. When children were then allowed to act upon the objects themselves, qualitatively similar patterns of cultural (imit...

متن کاملYoung children's understanding of multiple object identity: appearance, pretense and function.
Evidence from theory-of-mind tasks suggests that young children have substantial difficulty thinking about multiple object identity and multiple versions of reality. On the other hand, evidence from children's understanding of pretense indicates that children have little trouble understanding dual object identity and counterfactual scenarios that are involved in pretend play. Two studies report...
